Years of wrong answers.
The infection left.
The symptoms didn't.

The Neuroimmune Collective exists for every person who was told it was anxiety — when it was so much more.

What if the anxiety wasn't the diagnosis? What if it was the symptom?

For millions of children and adults, behavioral and neuropsychiatric symptoms aren't rooted in a primary mental health condition — they're the result of an immune system attacking the brain. This distinction changes everything: the diagnosis, the treatment, and the outcome.

"Behavioral symptoms may be autoimmune. Recognizing the difference can change the course of a life."

Meet Emily. A lifetime of answers that didn't add up — until one finally did.

Emily grew up outside of Philadelphia, a happy and curious child with a twin sister and a full life ahead of her. But from toddlerhood, recurring strep infections marked the seasons. And at age seven, something shifted. Severe anxiety arrived suddenly — intense, disorienting, and out of nowhere.

For years, the symptoms waxed and waned. In fifth grade, a perfect storm including mono, strep, and undetected Lyme disease sent everything into overdrive. OCD-like symptoms took hold. By eighth grade, Emily could barely keep up. Academically, physically, emotionally. The life she had known became increasingly hard to hold onto.

What followed was years of searching. Doctor after doctor. Diagnosis after diagnosis. None of them right. Because what everyone kept treating as anxiety and OCD was never a primary mental health condition. It was her immune system misdirected, attacking her brain after every infection.

In December 2022, after years of her own research and relentless self-advocacy, Emily finally sat across from a specialized neurologist who listened. Really listened. He confirmed what she had long suspected: she had been living with PANDAS — Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal infections, since around age seven. She was also diagnosed with autoimmune encephalitis.

Today, both conditions are in remission and well managed. Emily is healthy, thriving, and channeling everything she went through into something that matters, so that no child loses years of their life waiting for an answer that should have come sooner.

What is PANDAS?

PANDAS — Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcal infections — is a condition in which the immune system, triggered by a strep infection, misdirects its response and attacks the brain. The result is a sudden onset of severe neuropsychiatric symptoms that can look, on the surface, exactly like anxiety, OCD, or behavioral disorders. This is where the confusion begins — and where the Neuroimmune Collective comes in.

The Symptoms

Sudden onset of anxiety, OCD-like behaviors, emotional dysregulation, tics, sensory sensitivities, cognitive decline, physical exhaustion, and separation anxiety — often following a strep infection or illness.

The Misdiagnosis

Because symptoms present as psychiatric, they are routinely treated as primary mental health conditions. Without recognizing the immune connection, patients receive care that treats the surface — not the cause.

The Hope

With proper diagnosis and medically targeted treatment, PANDAS is manageable. Early recognition changes outcomes dramatically. That's why awareness, education, and advocacy are not optional — they're urgent.

Our Purpose.

The Neuroimmune Collective exists to close the gap between medical understanding and lived experience. Through advocacy, education, and shared stories, we are building a community where patients are believed, caregivers are equipped, and clinicians are informed — so that recognition comes sooner, and suffering is shorter.

For Parents & Families

If your child's behavior changed suddenly and nothing has explained it — you are not imagining it. We'll help you understand what questions to ask, what to look for, and how to advocate for your child.

For Educators

Teachers and school staff are often the first to notice when something has shifted in a child. Understanding the difference between behavioral challenges and immune-driven neurological symptoms could change a student's trajectory.

For Medical Professionals

Pediatricians, therapists, and specialists play a critical role in early recognition. The Collective is committed to supporting clinical education and bridging the gap between lived experience and medical understanding.

Let's Connect

The Neuroimmune Collective is a gathering place for patients, parents, and professionals to share what they've learned — so the next person finds answers faster than the last.

Whether you're looking for answers, looking for community, or looking to help others find both — we're glad you're here.
